BDVA i-Space labelling: Call 2017 open now!

European Innovation Spaces (BDVA i-Spaces) are cross-organizational and cross-sectorial environments allowing Big Data challenges to be addressed in an interdisciplinary way and serving as European hubs for research and innovation activities. They are one of the four pillars of the BDVA Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda. The Big Data Value Association grants a label for European Innovation Spaces to help drive forward Big Data adoption across all domains within European industry. The i-Space label is well recognized as a quality label on European level. It benchmarks the different initiatives through five selective categories. The label which is always granted on large European Big Data events creates visibility to the national efforts around Big Data.

BDVA at the DSM conference on the free movement of data

BDVA representatives joined last July 17th the Digital Single Market conference on the free movement of data. The conference, held in Tallinn, was one of the official events of the Estonian EU Presidency.
The priorities of the Estonian Presidency are actively focused on creating a digital single market within the EU. The digital single market cannot be built without a special emphasis on the free movement of data among member states. The free movement of data provides a visionary framework for accessing, sharing and (re)using data not only between public authorities and private companies but across all member states’ borders.With the conference, Estonia takes on the complex challenge of steering and providing a platform for this highly important discussion that will shape the future of the EU.

Launch of the new EDSA Dashboard

The European Data Science Academy (EDSA) launched a brand new dashboard that allows users to explore the current demand and supply with regard to data science skills. In particular, the new dashboard enables users to:

  • View the current demand for data science jobs across Europe.
  • Filter demand by required skills and region.
  • View trends and statistics regarding data science jobs and skills for a given timeframe.
  • Explore the current supply of courses and learning materials that will help them acquire certain skills.
  • Build personalised learning pathways towards acquiring certain skills.

Big Data - HPC workshop in Bologna (July 4th)

In the light of a closer cooperation between the two associations, ETP4HPC and BDVA co-organised a technical exchange meeting on July 4th as part of an EXDCI technical workshop. The focus was on paving the way for a better understanding of the intersections in scope, research directions and priorities of both platforms. In former meetings, the difficulty was finding a common technical language and perspective on common subjects as compute infrastructure and requirements for its next generation.

Data Start-up acceleration with Data Pitch: First call Open!

Data Pitch is a Europe-Wide accelerator offering startups €100k equity-free funding to tackle corporate and public sector challenges with data. Start-ups and SMEs will support funding and support for their data-centric business idea.
The first call for applications opened on 1 July 2017 with a deadline of 1 October 2017. 12 different challenges are offered in 3 different tracks (data provider challenges, sector challenges, and Open Innovation Challenges). SMEs and start-ups all over Europe are called to participate in this call.
It is a fantastic opportunity that will put forward proposal for creating high impact, innovative products and services, strongly supporting the development of the European Data Economy.

Updates in the BDVA management team

The Big Data Value Association celebrated its 10th General Assembly last June 21 in Brussels. Among other important topics, the BDVA members were called to elect and renew some of the members of its Board of Directors, and to re-elect one of the Vice Presidents. We very much welcome Yannick Legré (EGI Foundation) and Simon Scerri (Fraunhofer IAIS) as new appointed directors of BDVA and we are glad to confirm the renewal of a 2-year mandate for Milan Petkovic (Philips, also Vice-President of BDVA), Andrejs Vasiljevs (Tilde), and Henk Jan Vink (TNO).

We are also happy to announce that Edward Curry (Insight) was re-elected BDVA Vice-president (Research/Academia) for a renewed period of 2 more years.

BDVA officially welcomes 27 new members

The BDVA General Assembly held in Brussels on June 21st officially admitted 27 new members: 

  • 3 Full members and 24 Associate members 
  • Members from 15 different countries: Austria (1), Belgium (1), Bulgaria (1), Denmark (1), Finland (2), France (4), Germany (2), Hungary (1), Italy (4), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Romania (1), Spain (2), Switzerland (1), Turkey (1), UK (2). 
  • In total 5 Large enterprises, 12 SMEs, 7 Research/Academia institutions and 3 institutions in other categories joined the Association.

BDVA at Net Futures 2017

Another successful edition of the Net Futures conference (Net Futures 2017) took place last June 28-29 in Brussels with a focus on "Internet, the economy and society in 2027".
The NET FUTURES edition 2017 was meant to serve as a wake-up call for policy makers and technologist alike, for civil society and the young whose future we will influence. Designed to place adeep-dive conversations and learnings right at a time when Europe is at the brink of entering the next industrial revolution: The Net. (Source: http://netfuturesconference.eu/).Data was at the centre of most of the speeches, presentations and workshops.
BDVA and BDVA members actively contributed to the event and in particular to the session "Data Protection: Brave new world of data". Read here the brief session report.  

Thomas Hahn (BDVA VP) at the EFM Round table 'Digitising European Industry - New Models for Manufacturing'

Last 21 June 2017, the European Forum for Manufacturing organised a Policy Dinner Debate on ‘Digitising European Industry, new models for manufacturing” held in the European Parliament, and chaired by MEP Reinhard BÜTIKOFER, Rapporteur and Member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, and. The event counted with the presence of Roberto VIOLA, Director General DG CNECT, European Commission.

Thomas Hahn, Head of corporate Technology Unit, Chief expert software and Industry 4.0 expert at Siemens, and, BDVA Vice-President, contributed to the debate, emphasizing the important role of BDVA and the Big Data Value PPP in contributing to this transformation, providing Data Innovation Recommendations, developing the European Big Data Ecosystem, guiding standards, and facilitating access to know-how and skills. 

BDVA Big Data Standards workshop - June 20

The Big Data Value Association is working in defining Big Data Standardisation and interoperability priorities. The work is being developed by the BDVA Task Force 6 (Technical Priorities) and in particular by the Subgroup 6 (TG6-SG6 Standardisation priorities). As part of the work developed by TF6, BDVA has also defined a Big Data Value Reference model.

On June 20th, BDVA organises a workshop in Brussels to engage with other standardisation communities as an important step to create the roadmap for Big Data Standards harmonisation. Representatives from ETSI, AIOTI WG3, CEN/CENELEC, OASC, ISO/JTC1/WG9, W3C, OneM2M, Industry 4.0, the European Commission, some Big Data Value PPP projects, some verticals and other important players will be joining this workshop.

Follow-up activities are expected during mid-August in conjunction with the ISO IEC JTC1 WG9 Big Data Reference Architecture Meeting held in Dublin and during autumn 2017.
