Supporting the establishment of data labs and ensuring their impact

BDVA organised a workshop marking the formal start of a new initiative, aimed at establishing a unifying framework where to share knowledge among members, projects and with a wider audience, in the context of Data Labs.

On 6 March, the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) held the first meeting with its members of its newly launched initiative on Data Labs, bringing together more than 160 participants from across the European data and AI community, including coordinators of AI Factories and Antennas, Data Labs, Data Spaces, experts in different disciplines across the data and AI ecosystem (data protection, AI-ready data, GenAI, advanced data analytics, HPC, policy, etc.), industry representatives in different domains and other relevant actors.

As one of the three private members of the Euro HPC JU, a DSSC partner, and an association with members actively involved in data spaces, AI and data technologies, governance, trust, and sectoral applications, BDVA is in a unique position to coordinate, support and guide Data Labs-related activities in a coherent and cross-cutting manner.

Moderated by the BDVA Senior Technical Lead Big Data and AI ecosystems Daniel Alonso Román, with the support of BDVA Board Member Daniel Saez Domingo (ITI), the session marked the formal start of this effort aimed at establishing a unifying framework where to share knowledge among members, projects and with a wider audience, collect inputs from experts and key actors, to contribute to shaping current and next phases of Data Labs.

This initiative will focus on:

  • Ecosystem mapping and clarification, including roles, dependencies, and value chains across the ecosystem.
  • Strategic guidance for future phases of Data Labs, such as investment needs, opportunities for synergies, areas for new pilots, needs for reference frameworks and use cases
  • Monitoring and evidence building, documenting early Data Labs implementations, particularly those under AI Factories, and collecting lessons learned from proofs of concept, pilots, and proof-of-deployment activities

The newly launched initiative is intended to provide structure, visibility and strategic coherence across BDVA’s ongoing efforts, connecting activities across its task forces and working groups. By bringing together stakeholders from industry, research and policymaking communities, the initiative seeks to create a coordinated environment for discussing the development and deployment of Data Labs.

Stay tuned, as we expect to produce a series of tangible outputs, including blogs and reports, gathering the main insights from our discussions, all highly relevant to our community. A new blog is on its way!
