BDVA is proud and honoured to announce that it is part of the SPE project consortium. The kick-off meeting took place in Paris on 10 June, which started its 3-year quest towards creating a roadmap for post-Exascale computing, uniting High-Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Quantum Computing & Simulation (QCS) strengthening and paving the way for Europe’s leadership in the post-Exascale era.

Across the next 3 years, the SPE consortium aims to identify crucial research and technological challenges, from which an agile and continuously updated roadmap will be developed. By mobilising a broader European ecosystem, the projects will be able to anticipate technological shifts, integrate emerging ideas and contribute to strengthening Europe’s global leadership in advanced computing.

Project coordinator Jean-Yves Berthou specified: “SPE is about helping Europe anticipate rather than react. It will enable Europe to master the convergence of HPC, AI and Quantum, while ensuring that future technologies serve science, industry, and society. SPE will provide a collective framework to align strategic priorities, mobilise new communities and position Europe as key contributor to global post-Exascale discussions.”

As the leader of community-related activities in the project, BDVA plays a central role in orchestrating the foundational activities to what roadmap and policy paperwork will build upon: activating the European Ecosystem and Community of Practice.

SPE is not starting from scratch, but rather fosters and relies on cross-domain collaboration, to identify gaps and disruptive ideas and engage new stakeholders and user communities. Due to the extensive ecosystem across academia, industry and research linked through BDVA, it will foster collaboration between the project and established communities, ensuring real-world input.

Through the International post-Exascale (InPEx.science) initiative and collaborations with mayor European and global organisations and events, SPE will ensure European priorities both shape and benefit from global discussions on the future of advance computing.

BDVA will work alongside partners from different sectors, namely inria, Université de Bordeaux, GENCI, cea, CERN, CSC, ETP4HPC, ParTec, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Fraunhofer, PCSS, ICSC, grnet, JÜLICH, CINECA, INFN, Università di Torino, Neovia Innovation, SIPEARL, Euroquic, Technical University of Munich and the University of Edinburgh.

SPE is a Horizon Europe-funded 3 years project, launched on 1 April 2026 with a budget contribution from the European Union of 2.5 million €.
