The highly anticipated beta version of the European Language Data Space (LDS) software was officially launched on 7 February 2025, taking a significant step toward establishing a unified European marketplace for language data and language-driven applications.

LDS is designed to create a trusted and efficient data exchange platform, catering to both public and private sectors. The initiative enables participants to share, sell and purchase language data products securely through a single platform, fostering collaboration across the language technology ecosystem while ensuring compliance with EU regulations.

At the core of the system is the LDS connector, which is installed on top of the user’s existing data infrastructure, which means that the data remains save on the user’s server until another participant requests access to it and all license conditions are fulfilled (e.g., a license fee is paid). It is a small yet powerful tool that facilitates secure, cross-platform data transactions among marketplace members. This software component allows users to manage their language data assets, set usage policies and engage in transactions with other stakeholders. It ensures that data-sharing conditions are enforced, licensing agreements are upheld and all transactions are logged for traceability and security.

The beta release, LDS v1.0.0-beta, introduces Identity and Access Management (IAM), some example user roles as well as basic support for several workflows, such as the search, negotiation and transfer of data assets or the creation of data products and offers. Future updates are already planned, with LDS v2.0 set for July 2025 and LDS v3.0 expected in January 2026, bringing further enhancements and expanded functionalities.

The LDS beta version will be presented officially in several events already in preparation. The LDS Launch Conference will take place on 19 March 2025 at the Cité internationale de la langue française, Château de Villers-Cotterêts (France), in the context of the launch of the ALT-EDIC, underlining the close connection and cooperation between both initiatives.

With this launch, LDS is paving the way for a more integrated and transparent language data economy, providing businesses and organisations with the tools to leverage language resources efficiently and securely.
