The amendment to the EuroHPC Regulation enabling the establishment of AI factories has come into effect, representing a major milestone in the implementation of AI factories. This creates a new activity pillar for the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).
The Regulation introduces AI factories, which will feature dedicated AI supercomputers to facilitate rapid machine learning, particularly for training General Purpose AI (GPAI) models, demanding substantial computing power. The new initiative will foster investments in AI-focused supercomputing services to draw in talent and assist users who specifically aim to train AI models in Europe. These AI factories will cater to a diverse array of European users, including startups, SMEs, industry, academia and the public sector, thereby contributing to the development of a highly competitive and innovative AI ecosystem in Europe.
As of now, a legal instrument is set in place to start working on the development of AI factories. This amendment is part of a broader AI innovation package introduced in January. It allows the EuroHPC JU to acquire, upgrade and operate AI factories, thereby improving access to European supercomputers for scientific and industrial users, especially AI startups and SMEs. AI factories will serve as a one-stop shop for startups and innovators, enabling the development of powerful GPAI models to support various emerging AI applications. They will also play a crucial role in enhancing European excellence in AI, ensuring Europe leads in global advancements while promoting responsible and ethical innovation. AI factories are anticipated to be operational by 2025.
BDVA is one of the three participating private partners of EuroHPC, alongside the European Technology Platform for High Performance Computing (ETP4HPC) and the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC). Our association is committed to collaborating with the European Commission, the EuroHPC JU and the future hosting organisations to support the implementation of the AI factories, as we will bring our community’s in-depth knowledge in the fields of Data, Data Spaces and Industrial AI.
