BDVA initiative in Data Labs – Ecosystem mapping
The BDVA community has taken an initial step to identify relevant EU initiatives that are either related to Data Labs or can contribute to their evolution. The table below presents the first results of this exercise, which will be further expanded.

Data Labs are recognised in the European Data Union Strategy as the building blocks of Europe’s AI ecosystem. Data Labs are introduced as specialised facilities, aimed to link data holders, common European data spaces, domain-specific data ecosystems, and the EU AI ecosystem, providing a portfolio of services to convert high-quality data into concrete AI deployment. However, Data Labs are emerging within a landscape where multiple initiatives and instruments already address parts of these challenges.
To provide some clarification and support their Data Labs development, the BDVA community has taken an initial step to identify relevant EU initiatives that are either related to Data Labs or can contribute to their evolution. This effort aims to clarify dependencies, synergies, and gaps, with the ultimate goal of defining a coherent value chain across the ecosystem. The table below presents the first results of this exercise, which will be further refined and expanded through subsequent iterations, leading to a comprehensive report on ecosystem mapping, alignment, and value chains for Data Labs. The discussion will continue during BDVA Data Week 2026, and more content will be published soon, so please stay tuned.
