BDVA at the SME event “wissensoffensive 2015”

On 10th August 2015, Dr. Andreas Metzger (paluno) represented the BDVA at the SME event "wissensoffensive 2015". In the opening panel on "Digitization and Big Data", Dr. Metzger discussed opportunities and risks of Big Data jointly with Brigitte Zypries (Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy) and Mirja-Hannele Ahokas (German Representation of the European Commission).

The panellists agreed on the opportunities for creating value from data and presented several success stories in domains such as Industry 4.0 (Internet of Things) and Transport and Logistics. More controversial viewpoints where exchanged when discussing risks. Where the Mrs. Ahokas advocated strong regulatory mechanisms to ensure data protection, Mrs. Zypries raised awareness that legislation should only interfere once it will be more clear what will emerge from Big Data. Dr. Metzger concluded that in addition to legal solutions, new techniques and methods for data protection can become a unique value proposition for Europe.

The event attracted over 120 decision makers and was under the patronage of Garrelt Duin, Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
