The Big Data Value European community convened in Spain: BDVA Valencia Summit 2016
After two successful editions in Madrid (June 2015) and The Hague (March 2016), the Big Data Value Association organised its 3rd Summit in Valencia from November 30th to December 2nd 2016. More than 350 experts from Industry, Academia, Public Administration, data owners and users from all Europe participated in that summit. With 19 keynotes, 2 expert panels, 35 parallel sessions, and 1 info-day session, those three days gave the opportunity to:
- Drive forward the Big Data Value ecosystem and improve visibility of Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the BDV PPP;
- Inspire and get inspired by real stories from data users and providers;
- Share and understand the state of the art in Big Data Technologies, big data challenges and opportunities;
- Incubate ideas and build consortium for 2017 H2020 calls.
25 sponsors provided excellent keynotes demonstrating the value of Big Data in European Digital Economy.
The European Commission was very well represented by Mr. Javier Hernández-Ros, Ms. Marta Nagy-Rothengass, and Mr. Kimmo Rossi. They shared with the audience the European Strategies for the data economy, the policies linked to the free flow of data and the upcoming H2020 BDV PPP calls.
Manufacturing, Cities, Health, Finance, Tourism and Space domains were covered at keynotes and parallel sessions, as well as Retail, Energy, Telecommunications and Media domains. Data management, Data Architectures, Deep Learning, Cognitive Computing or Data Visualization composed the technical key pillars of the summit. Social and legal aspects, as well as Data Privacy and Standardization were also the focus of some parallel sessions. Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and the contributions from BDVA to the Work Programme 2018-2020, configured the strategic and policy side of the event.
Collaborations with other strategic European initiatives such as EIT Digital, ETP4HPC, COPERNICUS, ARTEMIS, and IPCEI for HPC and Big Data, were reinforced through interesting public debates. Big Data initiatives from Member states (Spain, Italy and Sweden) also played an important role in the discussions through a dedicated parallel session. Finally, BYTE, EuDECo and Big Data Europe initiatives had parallel sessions to show the impact they are creating in different application domains.
In conjunction with the summit, BDVA held its Board of Directors and General Assembly resulting in a strong consolidation of the membership base, the renewal of the management team, the review of the operational structure and consolidation of activities for 2017.
After an intense first day summit, participants learned about Valencia traditions like Las Fallas, and enjoyed the fantastic Mediterranean food. In the gala dinner, BDVA performed the i-Space Label award ceremony where four Silver (Teralab, SDIL, SICS ICE and Know-Center) and one Bronze (Eurecat) labels were awarded.
The summit was hosted by ITI and Universitat Politecnica de Valencia and organized by BDVA and ITI, with the special contribution of Answare Tech. We would like to thank our sponsors: Titanium (Huawei, Siemens, imec, EGI, BYTE Project and CEA), Platinum (Thales), Gold (ATOS, IK4, Mozaika, VTT, Inria and EuDECo) and Silver (Boeing, Centic, Inmark, Insight, Paluno, Planetic, SICS, SINTEF, Tecnalia, Tilde, TNO and Trilateral Research). We would like to also thank all the speakers and the audience for the successful Big Data Value Summit.
